The Șinca Nouă Project

To protect the unique and stunning landscape around Sinca Noua, little would have to be done. Just keep it the way it is.

In a first step, we looked into the existing biodiversity. The results were stunning (see Flora and Fauna) and we are now working on a monitoring programme to be able to identify and understand changes in land-use. Most important factor for the rich biodiversity of the region is the traditional, small-scale agriculture. In most regions of Europe, this has been replaced by modern, intensive agriculture, which does not leave place for a large variety of plant and animal species. It is therefore our goal, to find means to support this traditional agriculture.

First step has been the its certification as organic. This has been relatively simple, since most people understood that the socio-economic changes will not leave space for their small farms, unless they can sell in niche-markets. In respect of changing the farms’ management, very little had to be done.

Now, we have developed plans for a large eco-centre, which should be an important economic base for the farmers in Sinca Noua. The Centre is planned to function as of 2010 and consists of two separate entities:

A Food Processing Centre

An Environmental Education Centre
